Nelum Botanics is committed to your health and safety. Using all natural and safe ingredients, including botanicals grown under organic or eco-safe conditions is our way of delivering on our promise.
It is important to understand, however, that because we make water-based products, we are required to use preservatives to protect products from developing mold, yeast, bacteria or fungi that can be harmful to you.
Because of our philosophy on health and well-being, we have carefully researched the safety data on the preservatives used in some of our ingredients, while protecting our finished products with a proprietary blend of ECOCERT certified preservatives made from Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin, Sorbic Acid.
Sodium Benzoate is a synthetic chemical produced when benzoic acid, which is found naturally in some fruits and spices, is combined with sodium hydroxide. It is has received the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status from the FDA and by European standards of cosmetic safety. It is also a preservative that is permitted in Organic and Natural products.
Controversies-Some recent concerns about this ingredient have been raised because of the dangers it causes when mixed with Citric Acid or Vitamin C, as in our Therapeutic Lip Cream or Aqua Vitae Neroli.
Rest Assured- There are different forms of Vitamin C, and the one we use is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, which is a relatively new form of Vitamin C and one which is the most stable. In order for benzene to form in a product, which contains both Vitamin C & Sodium Benzoate there has to be the right conditions i.e. heat and oxygen over a prolonged period of time. Our cosmetic products don't provide these conditions and with the careful use of antioxidants there is even less chance of it happening.
Used In- Therapeutic Lip Cream and Aqua Vitae Neroli
Propanediol exists in two common forms, 1,2-propanediol (propylene glycol), which is HORRIBLY DANDEROUS and 1,3-propanediol, which is deemed safe by European standards.
Controversies- It is often confused as being a synonym of Propolyn Glycol because of its similar molecular structure. As such, it is feared and relegated to the list of dangerous chemicals.
Rest Assured-The difference between Propanediol and Propalyn Glycol depends on the position of the alcohol molecule. With the different positioning of the alcohol molecule1,3, propanediol is completely benign. The only issue I have with it is that I recently learned that it posses a risk to workers manufacturing this chemical. For that reason alone I am looking for an alternative ingredient.
Used In-Aqua Vitae Neroli
Potassium Sorbate is a mild preservative being used in cosmetic and skin care formulas as a Paraben alternative to prevent or retard the growth of microorganisms and protect products from spoiling. Produced from Sorbic Acid, which is naturally found in the berries of the mountain ash tree, Potassium Sorbate is effective against fungi, mold and yeast, but less active against bacteria, and therefore not considered a broad spectrum preservative; it needs to be used in conjunction with other preservatives to ensure formulas are totally protected. It is used in a wide variety of skin care and cosmetic products, including facial, eye and hair care formulas.
Controversies- Some people have sensitivities to this ingredient when used above its recommended dose.
Rest Assured-We use this ingredient at a fraction the recommended does and mix it with a proprietary blend of ECOCERT preservative.
