Starting in our mid to late 20s, our skin becomes progressively mature. As we enter our 30's and 40's we will begin to see more apparent signs of mature skin: drier skin, less supple, loss of elasticity, decreased circulation and fine lines begin to appear.
Free radicals cause our cells to oxidize and hence degenerate. This is what causes us to gain signs of aging.
Antioxidants, notably vitamin A, C & E and selenium can prevent or at least stall the formation of free radicals. This is why a healthy diet and the use of herbal treatments are essential for maintaining a healthy glow---essential oils and botanical extracts are rich in antioxidants, cytophilactic compounds (stimulate cell rejuvenation), vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, which are integral for nourishing your skin. Another important element is water! Mature skin loses its water content to 7% (from anaverage of 13% in younger skin), which is why hydrating is very important. Below is a step by step ritual on how to care for your mature skin so that you can protect it, nourish it and rejuvenate it.
Compress: Traditionally, compresses are graet for loosening up dead cells and dirt from pores prior to exfoliating or cleansing. But with mature skin, you don't need to cleanse more than once a day, and certainly not exfoliate more that 1-2 times a month. Instead, a warm compress in the morning for mature skin is really for increasing your circulation. In the process dead skin cells will also loosen up enough for you to just rinse off with water. Pat dry.
Mist: Apply an organic floral mist, preferably a rose based floral mist like the one we have to balance your skin tone, whilst hydrating your skin.
Moisturize: use a moisturizer with effective active ingredients such as essential oils to stimulate circulation and as a source of antioxidants, a good humectant to draw in moisture, and botanical extracts to provide vitamins, fatty acids and other nourishment. Nelum Botanics custom makes face serums with all of these properties. But for maximum results, face serums must be applied while the mist is yet on your face.
Cleanse: At the end of the day, cleanse with a product containing alpha hydroxy acid such as organic non-pasteurized apple cider vinegar (ACV). After cleansing, apply Therapeutic Lip Cream, Aqua Vitae and a face serum (or your preferred moisturizer).
